Is Apple Moving Us to Centralized Systems

What goes around comes around. I don’t think it is much different in the personal computing space than the enterprise space. For enterprise systems we tend to de-centralize then centralize, just long enough to catch our bearings then we de-centralize again.
The WSJ had an interesting article on the next gadgets Apple might be developing. It makes the statement that Apple is moving towards more home devices that ‘colonize’ rooms in your home. A small switch from the successful mobile products Apple has been developing. Possible products such as wall-mountable digital picture frames with speakers that play various media types, a clock radio that broadcasts music across your home network, or maybe an universal remote control that lets users browse media collections and queue them up on stereos around the home.

While some may see this as an attempt of Apple to completely control the home I see it as something a bit larger. Possibly unknown to Apple, I think this is a general move to centralize the vast amount of content we have to deal with day-in and day-out. And where better to do that than from your own home. Once we centralize and regroup, look out for another huge push to extend that home base into the true next generation of personal devices. How long? Your guess is as good as mine.
